What are your biggest challenges as an author and freelance writer and how do you overcome them?

Making consistent money at writing is a challenge; still working to overcome this challenge. I suppose what it comes down to is making that a priority, rather than the writing itself, which is difficult because I am all about the writing. It’s a learning process but fun.

Share your best career moment.

I would say the day I first got published but that is not true. I don’t think I have a specific moment. Every time I start or finish a novel is a big moment. After 11 completed novels, it is becoming old hat I guess, but it’s still special.

Describe your writing process for starting a new book.

Since I’m deep into different series right now, it’s the previous book in the line. Once I’m several thousand words in, I’m already starting to wonder what the next in the series will be, what each character (assuming they are still alive) will be up to. My current one, Murder Haven, bleeds into the next very well. It has a large cast of characters so I focus on what has happened to them first and how that might change their lives within the context of the overall storyline.

What inspires your creativity?

I only write what the voices tell me to write. Ha ha. But for real, it’s an amalgamation of everything I’ve read or watched or been in contact with during my time on this earth. I can’t explain it. I think because I have always been a huge, huge reader and film buff that I can crank out so much copy and so many stories. I thought, before I ever finished my first book, that it would slow down, that I only had so many in me but the opposite has happened. The more I write, the more ideas pop up.

What’s the first thing you read in the morning?

My email. I wish that wasn’t true but I never read the paper and the mornings are my time for writing; I read at night before I go to sleep. I would say that is the best part of my day. I get to crawl into bed with my beautiful wife and newborn son and we read to him and to ourselves and I fall asleep with a smile on my face because I am so lucky. I love it.
